Trailer

A backlit portrait in soft wind and haze

“Explores the psychic space of refugees forced to abandon home.”

— Deadline

“…an artistic way of portraying a state of mourning. From America's clear blue sky, her gaze remains fixed on the sky of her homeland, where blood has rained for years. And the film flies like a dove between these two skies.”

— Saeed Ghotbizadeh, Film Critic

Director's Statement

I did not want to make a film about grief. I wanted to create an invitation into the quiet space where grief can finally be felt.

LineOut began with footage I recorded during my family’s escape from Kabul in 2021, when survival left little room to process loss. Years later, I returned to those fragments through imagination, placing firsthand images beside dreamlike scenes on the California coast.

The film lives in that space between escape and aftermath, memory and healing.

'LineOut' Director Nazila Azizi On Using Magical Realism To Capture Afghan Refugee Experience

Only a few years ago, Nazila Azizi was dodging bullets fired by the Taliban and trying to climb aboard one of the last evacuation flights out of Kabul. Today, the Afghan native is an architect and filmmaker, with a documentary in contention for Academy Award recognition. LineOut explores the psychic space of refugees forced to abandon home.
